The first Black Panther film was a smash hit in theaters and on Disney+, but T’Challa will also be popping up in video games. That’s right, EA has a single-player Black Panther game in the works, and it will be played from a third-person perspective. It’s being made by a new studio called Cliffhanger Games, and it will focus on the story of Wakanda.
In a press release announcing the project, EA said that Cliffhanger is a “new AAA studio” led by a former VP at Monolith Productions (developers of Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Middle-earth: Shadow of War II). The rest of the team is made up of industry veterans from titles such as Halo, God of War, and Call of Duty.
It’s not clear whether the game will be an open-world or a more traditional action adventure. But the new studio is certainly capable of delivering.
EA’s adamant that this game will give players “more agency and control than ever before” in a story-driven video game, and it will let players experience what it’s like to take on the mantle of Wakanda’s protector. The company is promising to deliver a world that is “expansive and reactive” and says it will work with Marvel Games to ensure the project’s authenticity.
The announcement is timed to coincide with the 57th anniversary of Black Panther’s comic debut, and it’s the latest in a series of Marvel games that the company has announced. Last September, it was revealed that EA’s Motive studio is working on an Iron Man game.
In the meantime, YouTuber TeaserPlay has shared a high-resolution concept trailer of the planned game, showing T’Challa in action as he takes on the streets of New York City. The clip was created using Unreal Engine 5, and it features ray tracing to render the character and the environment. It will be interesting to see how the final game looks in-game, and if it uses a similar level of detail as this trailer.
No release date has been set yet for the new Black Panther game, and it’s likely that it won’t be out for several years. But this is a good sign, because it means that the developers are putting in a lot of work to make the game as realistic as possible. Stay tuned for more updates on the project.
